If you are actively engaged on social media, then you must have seen the heated argument about who has the best Jollof rice. Ghana or Nigeria? Some friends maybe upset with me but I will have to give this one to my Ghana people. The aroma, the taste, the color screams perfection. Have you ever seen a Ghanian mother make Jollof rice? The passion in her eyes is priceless. I have had the honor of experiencing a friends mother make the dish and I must say, it was a moment to remember. Till date, I make my Jollof a la Ghana style.
Please excuse me, my mouth was to busy salivating. I just might make a pot of Jollof rice. Once more I deviated from the topic at hand.
As I read the tweets, the posts and the conversation threads on this topic, all I could think of is, how can one dish bring discourse amongst a group of people from different nations? What power lies within food? With that said, food always brings people together and a great conversation starter. I can say so through the multiple experiences I have had. From eating in the same plate with my Senegalese friends, hosting dinner parties, to unconventional dinners with my family, food has always been the glue that brings people together. With that said, I urge you to stew up a pot of Jollof rice, recipe upon request or better yet, order from your closest Ghanian restaurant, grill or fry some chicken, invite friends and/or family and talk the night away. I know I will.
